Seariders send Mules to a loss

By

POSTED: Saturday, September 27, 2008

Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto watched his offense go 18 minutes without getting a first down.

Then he watched that same unit completely dominate the defending state champions.

Danny Kekoanui and Johnathan Ligsay combined to rush for 258 yards and four touchdowns as No. 7 Waianae knocked off second-ranked Leilehua 27-21 last night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium, ending the Mules' 11-game win streak.

Leilehua (5-1, 3-1 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West) lost for the first time with junior Andrew Manley starting at quarterback. The Mules hadn't been beat since a 22-21 defeat to Campbell on Oct. 12, 2007, which was before Manley was called up from the junior varsity team.

“;(Leilehua) is a great team and with Manley at quarterback, their offense is so special,”; Matsumoto said. “;It's scary when that offense is on the field and we tried to keep them off of it as much as we could.”;

Waianae (4-2, 4-0) did exactly that by dominating the line of scrimmage after halftime. The Seariders possessed the ball for 25 of the game's final 29 plays and compiled 225 total yards in the second half.

“;We went in at halftime and made some adjustments,”; said Kekoanui, who carried the ball 28 times for 148 yards and two scores. “;The whole team came together and we had to do what we had to do.”;

Ligsay, who had been an offensive lineman his entire career, made the move to fullback this season and added 110 yards on 14 carries, combining with Kekoanui to give the Seariders a deadly 1-2 punch.

“;I want to dedicate this to my father, who passed away last year,”; Ligsay said. “;I'm proud of the defense for stepping up and keeping us in it.”;

By the time Ligsay's 31-yard run midway through the second quarter gave the Seariders their first first down, the Mules had already taken a 14-point lead on two touchdowns by Rico Newman.

Ligsay's 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter came after a 10-yard scramble on fourth down by quarterback Keoni Naiperala-Rose kept the drive alive.

Waianae trailed 14-7 at halftime, but recovered the opening kickoff of the second half and Kekoanui scored on a 20-yard run to make it 14-13. Manley answered on the first play of the ensuing drive, hooking up with Chevis Aberilla-Ramento for a 58-yard touchdown to give the Mules an eight-point advantage.

But it was all Waianae from that point on, as it methodically moved the ball at will against a fatigued Mules defense that couldn't make the important stop when it needed to. The Seariders possessed the ball for 17 of a possible 24 minutes in the second half.

“;We just went to our basic offense and stuck with it,”; Matsumoto said. “;I think they keyed on Danny a lot early, and rightfully so, but that opened the door for Ligsay and allowed us to do what we did.”;

Manley finished 17-for-29 for 190 yards, but completed just five passes after halftime.
