Asano honored for judo exploits

Olympic silver medalist Kevin Asano was named to USA Judo's inaugural 13-member Hall of Fame class yesterday.

Asano, a 1981 Pearl City High graduate, earned a silver in the 60kg division at the 1988 Seoul Games. He lost the gold-medal match to South Korea's Kim Jae-Yup on a controversial one-point penalty.

The first judoka from Hawaii to compete in the Olympics, Asano has remained active in the sport as sensei of Leeward Judo Club and president of Hawaii Judo.

Inductees were to be recognized during the finals of the U.S. Open Championships today at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. 

Hee, Mead added to HWB rosters

Infielder Jonathan Hee and pitcher Kaimi Mead will join fellow Hawaii native Kala Ka'aihue in the four-team Hawaii Winter Baseball League, which begins today with games at Les Murakami Stadium and Hans L'Orange Park.

Hee, who was drafted this year by Boston, has been assigned to the two-time defending champion North Shore Honu while Mead, drafted by Cleveland, will join the Honolulu Sharks.

 

Buckley, Tuson-Turner in top 4

Shandy Buckley and Hannah Tuson-Turner placed third and fourth, respectively at the PCCSC Women's Singlehanded Championships yesterday in San Diego.

Both sailors failed to qualify for the sailing's Singlehanded Nationals, which will take place in November in Ithaca, N.Y.

 

Wahine tie for third time this season

The Hawaii soccer team began its three-game road trip with a 1-1 tie against Portland State yesterday in Portland, Ore.

Sophomore Mari Punzal scored her first goal of the season for the Wahine (3-3-3).

 

Berton leads Warrior golfers

Hawaii junior Robert Berton shot a three-over 147 and is tied for 25th after the first day of the William H. Tucker Invitational yesterday at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

Berton carded rounds of 69 and 78 to lead the Warriors, who currently sit in 15th place at 616 (plus-40).

 

Swanson earns silver in judo

Hawaii Tenri judoka Melinda Swanson placed second in the plus-78kg division at the U.S. Open Judo Championships yesterday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Zane leads Vulcans after first day

Stephen Zane is in sixth place after shooting a 1-under 71 to pace Hawaii-Hilo yesterday in the first round of the Western Washington/Viking Invitational in Bellingham, Wash.

The Vulcans are tied for sixth after shooting a 295 in the 11-team tournament.

 

Vulcans defeat Argonauts in 3

Brazil native Josimara Pinheiro had 18 kills and Mary Claire Bolo added 10 to lead Hawaii-Hilo past Notre Dame de Namur in straight sets, 25-23, 25-15, 25-16 yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in PacWest conference play.

» Agnes Tuilevuka had 15 kills to lead host Brigham Young-Hawaii over Hawaii Pacific 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 yesterday in Laie.

 

Vulcans kick past Mavericks

Kara Hazen had assists to teammates Megan Pachecano and Adele Letro as Hawaii-Hilo defeated Mesa State 3-1 yesterday in a women's soccer game in Keaau.

The Vulcans (4-3) shut out the Mavericks despite allowing 10 shots on goal.
