Before and after, the Roosevelt Rough Riders were spirited to the max on senior night.

In between, the Kahuku Red Raiders were party poopers. Amanda Tonga and Nile Te'o pounded 10 kills each as No. 3-ranked Kahuku swept Roosevelt 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 last night. A crowd of about 200 watched in muggy Roosevelt gym.

The visitors controlled the net with five blocks, but took command from the back line with 10 aces. Just about every time Roosevelt dared to challenge the taller Raiders, Kahuku silenced the raucous crowd and the Rough Riders with tough serves.

Left-hander Lavinia Wesley's jump serve and heavy topspin netted five aces. Te'o added four kills for Kahuku, which improved to 9-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play.

Kahuku's serve wasn't perfect. The Red Raiders committed 10 service errors, but the momentum of their serve doused Roosevelt.

“;It takes away from your game. We had to get mentally into the game. That's why I was subbing so freely,”; Roosevelt coach Rudy Sambrano said. “;A couple of them were still fired up, but it's hard for just two players to do it all. The way Kahuku approached their game, they broke down some of our girls mentally.”;

Lauren Kunishige led Roosevelt (2-6) with six kills. Leina'ala Batalona added four kills, seven assists and her team's only ace.

Candace Tufaga had seven kills, all in the first two sets, for Kahuku. Tajana Santiago delivered 29 assists and tallied three kills as the Raiders hit .289.

Roosevelt hit .101, but had its share of runs. Still, the visitors didn't call a single timeout.

“;The poise, the chemistry, the intensity and energy were all working very smoothly for us,”; Kahuku coach Uila Fotu Vendiola said. “;We didn't allow them to get on any runs. Sometimes we struggle with that.”;

Kahuku never trailed in the opening game, but committed seven hitting errors and four service errors to let the Rough Riders stay close. Roosevelt was only down 14-13, but Tufaga had two kills and a block to help her team take control with an 8-3 run.

In the second game, Roosevelt got within 8-7 after a kill by Batalona and a pair of hitting errors by Kahuku. The Rough Riders stayed in range, down 12-11, when Kahuku scored five of the next six points, including an ace by Te'o.

Tonga, 6-foot-1 junior, slammed three kills as Kahuku won the set going away. The Red Raiders hit .448 in the second set.

Kahuku's size off the bench resulted in four blocks during the third set. Clinging to an 18-16 lead, Kahuku reserve Ho'onani Apo had a kill and Tonga added a kill and block to spark a 7-1 run to close out the match.

“;Today, we were too excited for senior night. We just weren't talking as much as we usually do,”; said Batalona, one of five seniors.
