Viloria wins warmup for title bout
Waipahu's Brian Viloria defeated Juan Javier Lagos by unanimous decision last night at the Sycuan Resort and Casino in El Cajon, Calif.
Viloria (23-2, 13 KOs) won all eight rounds on all three judges' scorecards, chasing Lagos around the ring the entire fight. Lagos was reluctant to engage with his opponent.
“;He was just in there to survive,”; Viloria said. “;It was quality work though. I got some rounds in and felt pretty good in there.”;
A small cut was opened on Viloria's right eyebrow after a head-butt, but that was the only adversity he faced.
Now, the former WBC light flyweight champion can begin preparations for a Dec. 13 fight in China against Ulises Solis (27-1) for Solis' IBF light flyweight title.
“;I'm going to put my nose to the grinder for the next two months and prepare myself mentally and physically for a world title match,”; Viloria said. “;I'm going to dedicate myself to becoming world champion again.”;
Isle players looking to bust BCS
Two years ago, it was Boise State. Last year, Hawaii wore the Cinderella slipper.
Who could be the next mid-major team to pop the BCS bowl bubble?
How about Brigham Young.
The 11th-ranked Cougars passed early-season tests against the Pac-10, edging Washington on the road and then blasting UCLA 59-0.
With nine local players on its roster, including defensive lineman Ian Dulan (Kamehameha-Hawaii '06), senior punter CJ Santiago (Saint Louis '04) and offensive lineman R.J. Willing (Kamehameha '03), BYU is taking things one game at a time, but knows the possibilities that await if it can complete a perfect regular season.
