Advertiser to increase prices

The price of the Honolulu Advertiser will go up Oct. 12.

The cost of the daily edition will rise to 75 cents from 50 cents, while the Sunday edition will increase to $2 from $1.75.

The paper said the increase is due to rising costs for fuel and raw materials and is the first hike since 1995.

Newspapers generally derive 70 percent of revenue from advertising and 30 percent from circulation, according to Maryland-based industry analyst John Morton.

“;It can vary up or down five points depending on what's going on,”; he said. With this year's 15 percent decline in ad revenue, “;the circulation percentage might increase some.”;

“;When you raise single-copy prices, it tends to depress, somewhat, single copy sales,”; Morton said.

The Sunday Star-Bulletin cover price rose to $1 from 75 cents Aug. 3, while the price for a daily edition is still 50 cents.
