This time it's San Jose State, where he served as an assistant from 1979 to 1983, and head coach Dick Tomey, a former colleague with the San Francisco 49ers.
“;I've been a longtime friend of his and I just know he'll have his team ready, so that's just a given,”; McMackin said. “;He's got some really good players on both sides of the ball and this will be a good game for him also, because he considers Hawaii very special.”;
As the Warriors prepare for their Western Athletic Conference opener, their remaining practices this week will be closed to the public. UH last closed its on-campus practices during its Sugar Bowl preparations last December.
“;I don't normally do this, but I think it's just a very important ballgame,”; McMackin said.
Warriors quarterback Tyler Graunke was back throwing the ball in practice yesterday, splitting duties with Inoke Funaki. Offensive tackles Laupepa Letuli (shoulder) and Keoni Steinhoff (broken finger) were also back in practice.
Linebacker Solomon Elimimian spent much of the morning on the sidelines resting a thigh injury, giving R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane more work at outside linebacker.
“;It's just a precaution,”; McMackin said. “;He's going to be fine, but we didn't want to take any chances with him.”;
