Zippy's alters hours at some of its locations
POSTED: Monday, March 09, 2009
Fewer Zippy's restaurants are 24-hour operations, as the company has curtailed hours at some locations.
While the Ala Moana and Pearlridge stores have long observed mall hours, other locations have reduced hours — primarily of indoor, table-service operations.
Counter service is still available 24 hours a day at most stores.
“;We wanted to make sure we were matching the needs of our customers with hours of operation,”; said Paul Yokota, chief operating officer.
Cost savings will be a benefit, he said.
Nobody who frequents the Makiki location need worry it will be unavailable for post-nightclubbing noshing.
“;That has to remain open 24 hours,”; Yokota said.
“;I used to go there, too, at 3 o'clock in the morning. I don't do that anymore,”; he chuckled.
Changes vary by store. “;Those operations that had a good customer base on a 24-hour basis in the restaurant, we kept the restaurant open,”; he said.
“;Dining habits have changed a little bit — people are not being out so late at night.”;
Some areas have two Zippy's — if one is closed, the other is still serving, he said.
Speaking of which, it is a curiosity that the William Henry Road Zippy's in Kaneohe remains open.
“;We have asked that question of ourselves as well,”; Yokota said.
It was established as a temporary spot in 2001 when Zippy's Kaneohe was torn down for rebuilding. It reopened and Kaneohe has two Zippy's.
“;It has its own little following.”; Customers “;take such great ownership of the stores — we're very proud of that,”; Yokota said.
Waipahu Zippy's will be able to re-establish its 24-hour following upon reopening March 23.
