Hawaii's Spangler honored by WAC

Hawaii relief pitcher Sam Spangler was named the Western Athletic Conference's pitcher of the week yesterday.

Spangler, a sophomore, pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball to earn a save against Minnesota on Thursday and then shut out the Gophers for four innings on Sunday.

New Mexico State catcher Jeff Farnham was the league's hitter of the week.

The Rainbows come home to play No. 26 Mississippi State this weekend at Les Murakami Stadium.

UH's Milca gets first weekly award

Hawaii outfielder Tanisha Milca earned the WAC's hitter of the week award for her performance in the Bank of Hawaii Classic last week.

Milca, a senior from Kailua, went 6-for-8 with her first career grand slam. It was the 26th home run of her career, moving her into sixth place in the school's record book. She drove in six runs in a win over Mount St. Mary's, one short of the program's record for RBIs in a single game.

Vulcans topple Silverswords in hoops

John Smith scored 25 points to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 98-82 victory over Chaminade last night at McCabe Gym.

Mohamed Tangara scored 22 points and had 16 rebounds for the Silverswords (14-12).

The Vulcans improved to 14-11.

Brigham Young-Hawaii rolls in tennis

Jenny Chin, Wen-Ling Wang, Ayako Ikeda and Shawni Porter all won singles and doubles matches yesterday to lead Division II No. 2 Brigham Young-Hawaii past Presbyterian College (S.C.) 8-1 in Laie.

» In the men's match, also in Laie, BYUH beat Presbyterian 7-2.

Rong Ma, Agnel Peter and Romeo Juhasz all won singles and doubles matches for the Seasiders.

» UC San Diego defeated Hawaii Pacific 6-3 in women's tennis yesterday in La Jolla, Calif.

Zora Vickova and Tinka Mihova won the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches of the Sea Warriors, who dropped their first match of the season and fell to 3-1.

UCSD improved to 5-2.

BYUH sweeps Grand Canyon in softball

Brigham Young-Hawaii swept Grand Canyon in softball, 5-4 and 6-2, yesterday at Laie.

In the fist game, Melissa Lehana had two hits, including a solo homer to lead the Seasiders (7-11, 3-3 PacWest).

In the second game, Lehano had three hits and two RBIs.

The Seasiders got complete-game pitching performances from Katresha Veazie and Julianne Tialavea.
