Michael Carter pumped in 24 points as Farrington made it back-to-back wins over Top 10 teams with a 55-50 double-overtime victory over No. 5 Kalaheo last night at Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse.

A raucous crowd of about 500 enjoyed the Governors' success, just a few days after Farrington upended eighth-ranked Moanalua. Farrington (11-8 overall) improved to 5-3 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East in its return from a two-year stint in the White Conference.

Kalaheo (10-7) dropped to 4-4 in league play.

“;They're starting to believe in themselves, starting to climb the ladder,”; said coach Allan Silva, who guided the Govs to the Division II state championship last year. “;It's the first time since I've been at Farrington, five years, that we've beaten Kalaheo.”;

James Smith added 12 points for the Govs, including a game-tying free throw with 1 second left in regulation. Smith missed the second try, but it was just enough to spare a senior-night gathering a heartbreaking finish.

Instead, Kalaheo endured another tough loss.

“;It's not for a lack of effort. Take nothing away from Farrington. They played great,”; Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. “;But it's been our problem the last three games. We need to make intelligent decisions, and we don't. But it was a great game with great effort by both teams.”;

Kalaheo had a 39-38 lead late in regulation when Smith drove from the corner and drew a foul.

“;I knew they'd try to cap me,”; Smith said.

“;All we had to do was play defense for 4 seconds,”; Furtado lamented.

Aaron Fernandez scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Kalaheo, but was under wraps for most of the game by Farrington forward Dayton Kealoha. After draining three bombs over Farrington's 2-3 zone in the first 3 minutes and 11 seconds, the 6-foot-3 gunner had just six shot attempts for the final 36-plus minutes.

“;We had to cover him, get a hand in his face, don't let him get the ball,”; Kealoha said.

Christian Kepa had 13 points, nine boards and five blocks for Kalaheo and point guard Richard Preza Haynes added 11 points and seven assists. Matt Gasparine-Young added 10 points and nine boards. Kepa's only trey of the game, a 22-footer with 21 seconds left in the first overtime, tied it at 47-all and led to the final extra period.

That's when Farrington got a pull-up 15-footer from Carter, who added a quick and easy layup a moment later when Kalaheo threw a pass away. After two foul shots by Smith and a layup by center Andre Pettis, the Govs were ahead 55-47 with less than a minute to go.

Fernandez drained a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left to bring the Mustangs within five, but they got no closer.

“;We just came to play. We wanted to avenge our losses,”; Carter said. “;Back then, we weren't really playing together.

Carter heard his share of pointers from older brother Oscar, who was one of the key contributors to last year's team.

“;I could hear him. He was saying, 'Drive the ball, keep your head up,'”; Carter said. “;But this was about defense. The fans were screaming and that helped our defense.”;

Jray Galeai poured in 23 points as the second-ranked Red Raiders wore down the Bulldogs in overtime.

Irwin Ah-Hoy hit two critical 3-pointers late, and Kahuku rallied from four points down with 40 seconds left in regulation. Marcus Monroe poured in 32 points to lead Na Menehune past the host Knights.

Monroe led a 3-point barrage by Moanalua in the third quarter, hitting four of his five treys. Jordan Ferreira scored eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning basket, to lead the Hurricanes past the visiting Mules.

Quentin Kimura scored 11 points in the third quarter as part of the Rams' 21-point outburst to gain a comfortable advantage over the Marauders.

Five players scored in double figures for Radford, led by Kimura's 18 points, which included 4-for-4 shooting from 3-point range.

Nick Tuamoheloa scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the first half as the Knights overwhelmed the visiting Bulldogs.

Castle limited Waialua to two field goals in the first quarter and was in control the entire game.

Ryoji Iguchi scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the host Falcons turned back the Chargers.

Josiah Demello hit for eight points as Pearl City ran out to the first-quarter lead, but Angelo Berady answered with eight in the second to lead the Kalani rally.

The Chargers pulled to as close as three points with about 6 minutes left in the game, but Iguchi hit a 3-pointer from the corner and the Falcons converted free throws down the stretch to pull away.
