"Always ... Patsy Cline" Based on the true story of country music legend Patsy Cline's friendship with a fan, the season opener at Manoa Valley Theatre features 28 of Cline's most unforgettable hits. Zenia Zambrano Moura stars as the songstress, while Suzanne Green plays Louise Seger, a Houston housewife who, over the course of a long correspondence, goes from Cline's worshipful fan to savvy manager to dear friend. "Da Mayah" Lee Cataluna's hit comedy from 1998 returns to Kumu Kahua Theatre. The storyline involves newly elected, not-too-bright Hilo mayor Lester Perez, his second-in-command and mistress Sandralene Leialoha Ferreira, a blackmail plot and a gangster. Directed by R. "Global Drifter Otokichi" Produced by University of Hawaii linguistics professor Sachiko Tanaka and performed by Japanese troupe The Theatre Weekend, this musical chronicles the true story of Otokichi, a Japanese sailor on a domestic cargo ship that was shipwrecked by a storm in 1832. After drifting for 14 months, just three of 14 crew members lived to land in what today is Washington state. "Inventing Van Gogh" A "haunting and hallucinatory" drama about the making of art, this production from Hawaii Repertory Theatre tells the story of the final van Gogh self-portrait, painted just before the artist's death. A contemporary painter is hired to forge the final masterpiece and finds himself squaring off with van Gogh himself. The Steven Dietz work is directed by Paul T. "Les Miserables" Diamond Head Theatre opens its season with the epic tale of the struggle against adversity, set in 19th-century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is freed and lives the life of an honest man, even becoming the mayor of a prosperous town. But his past still haunts him. "Stop the Clocks" Two one-act plays by MFA acting student Brad Larson open the University of Hawaii-Manoa's Late Night Theatre season. "Lost in a Day" opens the show, followed by "Hypegiaphobia." The latter, says Larson, is inspired by "ideas or observations I make on a daily basis. "Rabbit Hole" Hawaii Pacific University is holding auditions for five roles for its production of "Rabbit Hole," to run Nov. 7 to Dec. 7. Roles are for women in late 30s/early 40s, early 30s and mid-60s, and males in late 30s/early 40s and 17 years old. Auditions will consist of readings from the script. "Hotel Street" The University of Hawaii-Hilo Performing Arts Department is holding auditions for "Hotel Street," written by Honolulu playwright Anthony M. Oliver and scheduled to run in November. The director is Jackie Pualani Johnson. The play is a look at the World War II Cosmopolitan Club, a Honolulu brothel during martial law in 1943. Seven women will be needed for the production: woman in her 40s, the rest in their 20s. No experience necessary to audition.
