Registration for 11th Textile Society of America Biennial Symposium Symposium, running Sept. 24 to 27 at Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, will be an international gathering of textile collectors, students, curators, educators, scholars and experts. Events will include presentation of scholarly papers, panel discussions, site seminars, textile marketplace and bookfair, a banquet and exhibits at galleries and museums around Honolulu. Call for entries Koa Gallery at Kapiolani Community College is seeking submissions for "Darkness," a photography exhibit that explores atmospheric, geographic, geological, mythological, personal, physical, psychological, socio/political, spiritual or other kind of darkness. Juror will be Shuzo Uemoto, professional photographer and professor of photography at KCC. Entrants must be 18 years or older. Call to artists The Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2009, a triennial exhibition, will run Jan. 6 to Feb. 22 at Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The challenge will feature works that best capture portrait subjects in Hawaii. Jurors this year are Maile Andrade, assistant professor at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and David Behlke, director of Koa Gallery at Kapiolani Community College. Artists 18 and older who are Hawaii residents are invited to submit works. Subjects may include anyone residing in Hawaii, and artists must have direct contact with subjects, including one live sitting. Preliminary jurying: Kauai (9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20, Kauai Community College, Scene Shop), Oahu (9 a.m. to noon Sept. 21, Academy Art Center), the Big Island (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26, Wailoa Arts Center) and Maui (9 a.m. to noon Oct. 4, Maui Arts and Cultural Center).
