Tia Carrere will boost Sacred Hearts benefit
NATIONAL STARDOM hasn't gone to actress-singer
Tia Carrere's head and made her forget her old school. Tia is a 1984 Sacred Hearts graduate and she and
Daniel Ho will entertain at the academy's annual scholarship gala Oct. 10 at the Hilton's Coral Ballroom.
Neva Rego and
Edna Hussey are co-chairing the event. Outstanding graduates
Ruth Chong Silberstein,
Sheila Gomes and
Keriann Kozuki Osada will be honored. Silberstein, class of 1960, is principal of Palolo Elementary. Gomes, class of '69, is a senior veep and manager of the Transaction Processing and Services Center at Bank of Hawaii. Osada, class of '89, is the fourth of five Kozuki sisters to graduate from Sacred Hearts. She is in the family's Vim & Vigor business and is the founder of "Building Blocks for Tots," a TV show about parenting strategies. The gala has raised over $1 million for Sacred Hearts scholarships in the past 12 years. Cost for the event is $125. For more info and tickets call

Former islander Zyron "Z" Schoniwitz, now G.M. of Morton's Steak House in Singapore, sends word that that he is a repeat winner of Morton's G.M. of the Year award. The award was presented at a Morton's conference in San Francisco recently. David Martin won the regional director of operations award for the third consecutive year. The Hawaii Arts Alliance will honor Edith and Keiji Kawakami at its Celebrate the Arts benefit concert Oct. 4 at the Hawaii Theatre. The Iolani Sportswear founders and arts supporters will receive the Alfred Preis Award for lifetime achievement in the arts. The Kawakamis' son, Lloyd and his sons, Nick and Alex, make up Manoa DNA. They will perform at the event. So will Dennis Kamakahi and his son, David, uke talent Neal Chin, and the one-and-only Eddie Kamae. Arts Excellence Schools singled out for cash awards are Jarrett, Kawananakoa and Washington Middle Schools on Oahu; Innovations Public Charter School, Hawaii Prep and Parker on the Big Island; and Kalama Intermediate and Seabury on Maui.
