Marianist event focuses on unity

The role of the church in nurturing and creating unity rather than judging and condemning will be explored in the Sept. 28 Mackey Marianist Lecture at Chaminade University.

Three members of the Marianist religious order will discuss "Catholicism in Prophetic Dialogue: A Marian Model of Church" in the free symposium at 4 p.m. at the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus at 3140 Waialae Ave. The Marian model is of a family of disciples, gathered together with respect for each person's gifts and needs, around the Mother of God, according to a Chaminade announcement.

The speakers will be:

» Carol Ramey, a lay Marianist and director of the North American Center for Marianist Studies, who lectures across the country on spirituality, social justice, Mary and small Christian community development.

» Brother Jack Ventura, former executive director of the Center for Marianist Spirituality in Philadelphia and now an administrator in the Marianists' U.S. Province, who has worked in vocation formation, AIDS ministry and developing small communities of faith.

» Isabella Moyer, a member of the first cyberspace Marianist Lay Community linking an international group. In February, she represented the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities and the Canadian Catholic bishops organization at a Vatican Congress for Women.

The Society of Mary, known as Marianists, is celebrating 125 years in Hawaii, where it operates the only Catholic university as well as Saint Louis School.

The annual lecture series is named for the late Rev. Robert Mackey, a founder of Chaminade University.

Minister to talk about evangelism

A "circuit-riding" evangelist in the United Methodist Church's California-Pacific conference will make preaching appearances at island Methodist churches next week.

The Rev. Kimball Coburn, whose "Evangelism in the Prophetic Spirit" ministry had taken him to more than 600 churches in 28 years, will tell local audiences how they are "called to be church." Each service is at 7 p.m.

» Monday, Kona United Methodist Church.

» Tuesday, Hilo United Methodist Church.

» Thursday and Friday, Aiea United Methodist Church, 99-101 Laulima St., Aiea.

» Next Saturday, Kailua United Methodist Church, 1110 Kailua Road, Kailua.

» Sept. 28, First United Methodist Church, 1020 S. Beretania St.
