Reality bites
Hawaii is reminded how much tougher it is to beat an FBS foe
CORVALLIS, Ore. » This one hurt on a bunch of levels.
Hawaii's promising start to yesterday's meeting against Oregon State dissolved into a blowout loss, leaving the Warriors to tend their wounds -- physical and otherwise -- heading into their first bye week of the season.
After Hawaii took the lead on its first possession of the game, OSU running back Jacquizz Rodgers and quarterback Lyle Moevao powered the Beavers offense while the defense shut out the Warriors the rest of the way in Oregon State's 45-7 win at Reser Stadium.
Rodgers rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and Moevao accounted for four scores (three passing and one rushing) to lead the Beavers.
Hawaii, meanwhile, struggled after their quick start to fall to 1-2.
"We didn't play well today and I take full responsibility for that and I promise (the Hawaii fans) that we will play well the next time we get on the football field," UH coach Greg McMackin said.
Hawaii quarterback Tyler Graunke was among the Warriors who didn't finish the game due to injuries as UH suffered its second road loss to a BCS opponent. Left tackle Keith AhSoon suffered a knee injury early in the game and, like Graunke, will be evaluated upon the team's return to Honolulu.
The Warriors have a week off to regroup before opening Western Athletic Conference play against San Jose State on Sept. 27.
"It sucks that we have to think about this for the next two weeks," said defensive end David Veikune, who posted a career-high 10 tackles. "But it's good that we can prepare and get ready to hopefully win another WAC championship."

Kealoha Pilares, seen here running for a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter yesterday against Oregon State defenders Greg Laybourn and Brandon Hughes, led Hawaii in rushing with 36 yards on eight carries. Pilares also caught three passes for 17 yards.
