While Farrington's Apelu Sooalu was the setup man, Dayton Kealoha made the plays to put the game away.
Sooalu racked up 119 yards on the ground to help set up Kealoha for two touchdown passes to receiver Drake Miller as the Governors (3-1, 2-0 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East) extended their winning streak over host Castle (2-2, 1-1) to three games and maintained their position as an early front-runner in league play with a 24-6 victory last night.
The Governors wasted no time getting to work. On their second offensive play - aided by good field position from an unsuccessful onside kick attempt and subsequent late hit by the Knights - Sooalu burst through a hole up the middle for a 32-yard score just a minute into the game.
"We got good field position, our offense did better from last week (a loss to Saint Louis)," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "Our scoring in the red zone was better this week, and we were happy about that."
Sooalu, doubling as a kicker, tacked on a 33-yard field goal in the first period after a stalwart defensive effort kept the Knights pinned deep in their own territory.
Then, starting the second quarter, Sooalu carried the Govs up the field with 27 yards on three carries, and set up Kealoha for another score. The first-year starter at quarterback faked a behind-the-back handoff, rolled out, and hit Miller with an impressive dart from 8 yards on fourth down to go up 17-0.
"It was a bootleg, and he was wide open, saw him coming across," Kealoha said.
He was thankful for his running back's effort.
"He gains a lot of yards, gets us in position to score, made it easier for us," the signal-caller said of his senior back.
Thanks to an overpowering effort in the trenches, Farrington kept the Knights off-balance offensively all night.
Castle's spread offense was held to 26 passing yards in the first half, and the Knights didn't push into Farrington territory until a busted Govs play pushed them back to their own 7. The ensuing punt went only to the 27, and Castle's Blake Rapozo made a clutch rollout pass to Shaydon Kehano on fourth down to set up his own quarterback sneak for a 17-6 deficit at halftime.
But early in the third quarter, Farrington again kept Castle pinned in its own territory and Kealoha found Miller - who beat his man downfield - wide open for a 37-yard score to push the lead to the final margin.
Castle coach Nelson Maeda attributed most of his team's struggles to the line.
"I think the battle was won in the trenches, and lost in the trenches offensively and defensively," Maeda said. "Four-man rush, three-man rush, we could not block them and give our quarterback time. Their team speed ... they ran down our runners. Their quarterback is a real good quarterback.
Rapozo finished with 77 yards and nearly drove the Knights to a score in the final minute, but by then it was too late.
