But Hawaii offensive coordinator Ron Lee is looking for the Warriors quarterbacks and receivers to develop another trait a bit harder to detect but no less vital to the function of the offense.
"I think we're going to be all right as soon as we start trusting each other," Lee said. "(Wednesday and yesterday) they threw the ball to where they were supposed to throw it and the receivers were making the plays. It takes a little bit of time offensively to trust in each other."
After an uneven performance last week against Florida, the Warriors offense will try to find its rhythm in tomorrow's home opener against Weber State. Kickoff at Aloha Stadium is set for 6:05 p.m.
Lee praised the effort of the Warriors receivers in practice this week, particularly senior slotbacks Aaron Bain and Mike Washington, who combined for six catches for 25 yards in last week's 56-10 loss.
"Coming off a loss we're just trying to pick ourselves back up. Everybody's been turning it up a notch," Bain said. "We have to have faith in what the coaches have been doing and have faith in each other."
Said Lee: " I thought they had their best week of practice. ... The guys are all competitive guys, proud guys, and they were bothered by the way they played. So they're anxious."
Inoke Funaki will make his first start at quarterback for Hawaii (0-1) tomorrow and took the majority of the snaps yesterday in the Warriors' final full practice before facing the Wildcats (1-0).
Tyler Graunke and Greg Alexander were second in the rotation in various drills. Lee said the recently reinstated Graunke got a feel for being back in the mix this week and "by the time we play Oregon State (next week) he'll be really competitive."
