SWAMPED

Florida is simply too big, too fast, too strong for Hawaii

GAINESVILLE, Fla. » A pregame downpour and overcast skies provided the Hawaii football team some relief from the heat that's so much a part of The Swamp's reputation.

But the Warriors couldn't escape a Florida deluge in the middle quarters of yesterday's season opener against the fifth-ranked Gators.

After a scoreless first period, Florida's speed, combined with six Hawaii turnovers, propelled the Gators to a 56-10 rout at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

"The first quarter we were shaking the world. We had everybody sitting on their hands," Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said.

The crowd of 90,575 had plenty to make noise about after that as the Gators spoiled McMackin's head coaching debut.

Florida defensive backs Major Wright and Ahmad Black returned interceptions for touchdowns and Brandon James took a punt return to the house as Florida cruised to its 19th consecutive season-opening win.

Inoke Funaki was a bright spot for the Warriors, leading the team to its only touchdown.

Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow completed nine of 14 passes for 137 yards and threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy in the third quarter.

A Hawaii offense replacing most of its weapons off last year's Sugar Bowl team generated just 241 yards of total offense and gave the ball away six times.

Florida countered with 406 total yards, including 255 in a ground attack led by Tebow and a crew of playmakers who exploited creases in the defense for long gains.

"Speed wasn't the issue -- it was the fact that we didn't execute, defensively, special teams and offensively," UH linebacker Solomon Elimimian said.

The Warriors flew to Atlanta right after the game and return to Honolulu today. They open the home schedule Saturday against Weber State at Aloha Stadium.

"It's kind of the same feeling (as UH's 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl)," UH center John Estes said. "But that was our last game and this is our first game. We still have the whole season to play and we have to clean it up."
