Film on autistic pro surfer screens on Maui
A young professional surfer with exceptional gifts and challenges is the subject of a new surfing documentary from Quiksilver. "Just Add Water" features Clay Marzo, a 19-year-old Maui resident with an aptitude for tube riding and aerial maneuvers.
Marzo, however, also has Asperger's Syndrome, a type of autism that makes certain social or controlled situations difficult for him. Sometimes those occasions include important surf contests.
"Just Add Water" will screen at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului at 8 p.m. Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m. It's the only screening in Hawaii, but the film begins playing in theaters nationwide this month, and DVDs go on sale in surf shops beginning Oct. 1.
