Anuenue shuts down JV football

Down to 16 players, it was time for Anuenue to close the door on its junior varsity football team.

"For safety reasons, we folded the JV program," coach Kealoha Wengler said last night.

Na Koa had just 20 varsity players, so adding the 16 gives Wengler and his team some breathing room. Anuenue, which plays in the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference, opened the varsity season on Saturday with a 20-15 loss at Kohala.

Using a new Double-Wing offense, Anuenue led 15-0 in the fourth quarter.

"We ran out of gas (at Kohala). It was a little bit of fatigue that made a big difference," he said. "This gives us more rotation for the varsity."

Numbers were fairly low partly because of a big graduating class that put a dent in Anuenue's football squad. Last year's team featured many seniors who had played on Palolo's Pop Warner championship team prior to high school.
