Mira Costa takes Ann Kang title

Mira Costa beat Wilson 26-24, 25-27, 15-11 in a battle of two California teams to claim the Ann Kang Invitational volleyball tournament at Iolani yesterday.

It was Mira Costa's second win of the day over Wilson, which took the Mustangs to three games twice in the tournament. Wilson had to win three straight matches to reach the championship after being knocked into the losers bracket by Mira Costa.

Mira Costa has won the tournament five times in the last seven years.

Donovan, James at Quarterback Club

Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan and women's track and field and cross country coach Carmyn James are scheduled to speak tomorrow at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's weekly luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom.

Donovan, who signed his contract at the end of July, will talk about his achievements since taking the job and explain his vision for Hawaii athletics.

James was voted as the club's Female Sportsperson of the Month of June and will receive her award at tomorrow's luncheon. Female tracksters Annett Wichmann, Emily Sheppard and Amber Kaufman will accompany their coach.

The luncheon is open to the general public and begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon.

Honolulu Legion team upended

In a battle of undefeated teams, Las Vegas topped Honolulu 12-4 yesterday in the American Legion West Region baseball tournament.

The winners punched out 15 hits and pitcher Joey Richard struck out nine in seven innings.

Honolulu faces Albuquerque, N.M., today.

Vulcans season tickets on sale

Season-ticket packages for the upcoming Hawaii-Hilo volleyball season are now available.

Single-season tickets are $50 and include home matches against Notre Dame de Namur, Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and Academy of the Arts. The alumni match and the 14th annual Hawaiian Style Classic are not included.

Single-game tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors ages 55 and over, and $4 for students 12 and over. Free admission is given to Hawaii-Hilo students with a valid student ID.

Smethurst shuts out Netherlands

BEIJING » University of Hawaii pitcher Justine Smethurst, pitching for her native Australia, got the first win of her Olympic career, shutting out The Netherlands 8-0 on one hit.

Former Hawaii player Stacey Porter went 1-for-3 and scored a run for Australia.

Smethurst took this past season off to focus on the national team. She returns in 2009 as a junior.

U.S. closes pool play with a win

BEIJING » Logan Tom had 25 points as the U.S. women's volleyball team defeated Poland in five sets today, the final day of preliminary pool play.

The United States had already clinched a spot in the quarterfinals before the 18-25, 25-21 19-25, 25-19, 15-13 victory. The women finish 4-1 in their pool, with the lone loss coming to undefeated Cuba.

The U.S. will have to wait until today's matches are finished to learn its quarterfinal opponent.
