Kamehameha crushes Kahuku in opener
It's safe to say the Warrior Air Express has arrived.
A year after new coach David Stant installed a pass-first attack, fifth-ranked Kamehameha went to work and blanked No. 4 Kahuku 35-0 last night at Aloha Stadium.
Junior Edmund Kamano Jr. completed 10 of his 16 pass attempts for 137 yards, including three touchdowns. Classmate Ryan Ho scooted through Kahuku's defense for 177 rushing yards on just nine carries, including touchdown jaunts of 80 and 71 yards. All of it came out of a pistol formation with super-wide splits between the O-linemen.
"I was on pins and needles, playing my alma mater," Stant said. "They are a good team. Because it's preseason, they're still checking on guys at different positions."
It was the first game for both teams, but the Warriors were in midseason form, partly because they've put the work in. Summer camp and a multitude of practices - double of what any public-school team had so far - certainly helps. Overcoming the mystique of Kahuku was another thing.
"We came out and it was like (playing) Saint Louis last year. This time it was Kahuku," Stant said. "But they played with confidence. They understand our offense a lot more now."
Kamehameha handed Kahuku its most lopsided defeat since a 43-7 loss to Waianae on Sept. 25, 1999.
Kamano was in command, pinpointing all his passes for a near-flawless night. His agility against a relentless Kahuku pass rush was invaluable.
"Their quarterback scrambling, he was so good at scrambling," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "And 37 (Ho), he was exciting to watch."
Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, Ho was sometimes too exciting. One backbreaking play came when Ho lined up in the backfield on fourth down to punt. The snap sailed over his head, but Ho scooped up the football in the back of the end zone, took his time and darted through the Red Raiders for a 15-yard gain and a first down.
Kahuku's new offense sputtered at times, particularly when new quarterbacks entered the game and snaps were mishandled.
"It's a good lesson for us," Torres said. "This is just the preseason. It lets us know how far we've come along. They know we'll take our lumps with the new things we're doing. Hats off to Kamehameha. They're going to be great in the ILH."
Kamehameha's quick defense often stacked one side of the line with four or five defenders and dared the Red Raiders to throw.
"They were going man on our receivers, but we couldn't throw," Torres said.
Kahuku's trio of signal-callers combined on 3-for-13 passing for 21 yards and two picks. Kahuku ran for 99 yards on 44 carries.
Kamehameha finished with 208 rushing yards on 26 attempts and tallied 345 total yards. Seven different receivers caught passes.
Ho opened the game with a long lateral from Kamano for an 80-yard jaunt up the sideline.
After Kamano scored on a 2-yard run with 5:40 left in the first quarter, the Warriors led 14-0.
Late in the quarter, Kamano scrambled left, then right, before finding Maika Mataele open for a 26-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
A short pass to Rylee Urasaki turned into a 27-yard touchdown play with 5:40 left in the second quarter and Kamehameha led 28-0.
Ho added his 71-yard touchdown run on the left side with 2:08 left to play.
