HCC’s Niino wins educational award
James Niino, a construction apprenticeship coordinator at Honolulu Community College, received the Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Career and Technical Education. Under Niino the apprenticeship program has undergone expansion with more than 3,500 students, which has aided the growth of the construction industry.
The University of Hawaii has selected five faculty members from campuses across the state as the recipients of the 2007 Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. The late Davis taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and UH-Manoa for 19 years.
The winners include Todd Belt, an associate professor of political science at UH-Hilo, who also serves as adviser to the Political Science Club and coordinator of the Internship Program; Kimo Chun, an instructor in the Native Hawaiian Education Program at Kauai Community College; Michael DeMattos, an educational specialist in the School of Social Work at UH-Manoa; Matthew Savage, a graduate teaching assistant in speech at UH-Manoa; and Teresa Shurilla, an instructor in the culinary department at Maui Community College.
