Local breweries team up for party
Beers of Hawaii will be featured at "Broke da Mout' Beers" on Thursday, a fitting kickoff to the long Statehood Day weekend.
The monthly "Hops & Grinds" event at the Willows runs 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with beers from Big Aloha Brewery, Brew Moon Hawaii, Keoki Brewing Co. on Kauai, Maui Brewing Co. and Mehana Brewing Co. in Hilo.
Cost is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Pupu buffet is included. Tickets are available at the restaurant at 902 Hausten St., Liquor Collection, Wine Stop and Tamura's Kaimuki. Call 952-9200. Must be 21 years or older.
Restaurants host garlic celebration
If garlic is your aromatic of choice, Auntie Pasto's has got plenty at its annual Garlic Fest, running through Aug. 31 at its Honolulu and Kunia locations.
The menu runs from martinis with garlic-stuffed olives, to a Garlic Soup of the Day and Garlic Crab Cakes. Entrees include pizzas, pastas and seafood dishes doused in garlic, as well as lamb shanks, osso buco, prime rib and burgers.

Chef's Table: 6:30 p.m. Thursday, features Oysters Two+Two, Crispy Seared Salmon with Shoga, Fire-Roasted Loin of Lamb, Crepes with Vanilla Ice Cream and Warm Strawberry Compote. Cost is $75.
Kaiseki Sake Dinner: Aug. 28, features a seven-course meal and sake pairings. Chef Russell Siu's menu: Fried Scallop Mousse, Oysters 2 Ways, Carpaccio of Seared Hamachi, Butterfish 2 Ways, Grilled Duck Breast with Root Vegetables, Black Angus New York Sirloin 2 Ways and Green Tea Crepe with Strawberries & Azuki Beans. Cost is $90.
Winemakers on tap at tastings
Vino in Restaurant Row showcases two winemakers next week (call 524-8466):
Aug. 19: Mike Kuimelis of Mantra Wines in Sonoma, Calif., offers a tasting of his high-scoring red wines beginning at 5:40 p.m. Barrel samples will be offered of his zinfandel, syrah and cabernet sauvignon, followed by a finished wine of each varietal. Cost is $25.
Aug. 21: Mia Klein, Food & Wine magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2003, will present wines from her own label, Selene. A tasting takes place at 5:30. Cost is $45.
A three-course wine dinner starts at 7:30 p.m. Chef Keith Endo's menu: Crispy Rock Shrimp (with 2007 Sauvignon Blanc: Hyde Vineyard"), Vino Beef Carpaccio (2000 Merlot) and Sous Vide of Veal Shortrib (2005 Merlot: Frediani Vineyard). Cost is $75.
