Hawaiian adds fees
$15 for first bag on Hawaiian
STORY SUMMARY »
Hawaiian Airlines said yesterday it is changing its checked-baggage fees, as well as adding a ticketing fee for bookings made over the telephone rather than online. The airline is also changing its frequent-flyer mileage requirements.
The company will begin charging $15 for a first checked bag on flights between the mainland and Hawaii. A $25 fee was implemented earlier this month to ship a second checked bag to the mainland in an attempt to soften the impact of rising fuel prices.
The airline's interisland competitor go! charges $10 for the first checked bag and $17 for a second bag.

Hawaiian Airlines said yesterday it is joining recent moves by major U.S. carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines and U.S. Airways by implementing a $15 fee for the first checked bag on trans-Pacific flights.
The fee applies to tickets purchased on or after tomorrow for travel on or after Oct. 1.
The company implemented a $25 fee earlier this month to ship a second checked bag to the mainland in an attempt to soften the impact of rising fuel prices. The airline said in its second-quarter earnings release yesterday that fuel costs increased 81 percent from last year to $123.4 million.
Hawaiian expects to recoup more than $20 million in annual revenues from the luggage charges, as well as other fees announced yesterday, Mark Dunkerley, president and chief executive officer, said in a conference call with investors and analysts.
"We are interested in finding ways to raise revenues," he said in an interview. "We thought long and hard about a first-bag fee for interisland -- economically it makes sense, but we are very conscious of the fact that travel here in the islands has a slightly different place."
Interisland, the first checked bag is free, while a second checked bag will cost $17. Mesa Air Group's interisland carrier go! will charge $10 for the first checked bag starting Aug. 10 and $17 for the second checked bag, which started July 15. The airline initially planned to implement a second-bag fee of $25, but lowered it when Hawaiian failed to match.
Certain items are excluded from the fee, such as strollers and personal assistive devices.
Hawaiian also said yesterday that it will charge a ticketing fee of $10 for interisland travel and $20 for all other flight bookings made over the phone. Airport ticketing will cost $25. Online bookings will remain free.
The airline is increasing its frequent-flyer mileage requirements for award travel on or after Sept. 1, upping some mileage minimums by as much as 20,000 miles. Hawaiian last changed its award travel requirements 14 years ago.
