Expert to demonstrate carving skills

New Zealand carver Te Kaha will demonstrate traditional Maori "pounamu" (greenstone) carving techniques at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Academy Art Center. The event is free.

Te Kaha, who specializes in traditional styles of work in indigenous stones, is a self-taught artist whose work is included in collections in New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.

He will also present two three-day workshops on creating a pounamu chisel, or "toki." The classes include Maori history, song and chant. They run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Monday to Aug. 6 and Aug. 7 to 9 at the art center. Tuition is $300 per session. Call 532-8741.
