Asia-Pacific group awards scholarships

The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council gave scholarships to eight students. Xuchyll Roman, an 11th-grader at Campbell High School, received the $100 Eddie Tangen Award; Kristyn Mathewson, a 12th-grader at Kaiser High School, received the $1,000 Edwin and Cobey Black Scholarship.

Recipients of the $1,000 Paul S. Honda Scholarship were seniors Ella Aiwohi of Kahuku; Michaela Mendiola of Aiea; and Sun Young (Kelly) Park and John Pyun of Kaiser.

The $1,000 Theresa McNeil Award went to 12th-graders Marcie Kagawa of Aiea High and Roger Shiu of Roosevelt High School.

Valisa Saunders, a Kaiser Permanente Hawaii certified gerontological nurse practitioner, has received the American Geriatrics Society's Clinician of the Year award.

The first nonphysician to receive the award, Saunders was honored for her dedication and contributions to advances in the gerontology practice and quality of care in her 22-year career at Kaiser Hawaii.

Sally Pestana, UH professor of health sciences, was elected one of 10 at-large members serving three-year terms on the National Education Association's Board of Directors.
