Stanley helps national team beat Spain
Former Hawaii All-American Clay Stanley put down 10 kills and added an ace as the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team swept Spain 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 in an FIVB World League match yesterday in Madrid.
Team USA leads Pool C at 7-1. Spain travels to Bloomington, Ill., for two matches with the U.S. on Friday and Saturday.
US women's team falls to Italy
The U.S. Women's National Indoor Volleyball Team saw its seven-match win streak ended yesterday when it was swept 25-22, 25-21, 25-16 by Italy during FIVB World Grand Prix Pool H action at Taipei, Chinese Taipei.
Former Hawaii All-America middle Heather Bown had a match-high four blocks and added a kill in the loss. Former Punahou setter Lindsey Berg started in place of ex-Rainbow Wahine Robyn Ah Mow-Santos and finished with 15 assists.
Team USA (7-1) travels to Yokohama, Japan, today and begins play in the Grand Prix final round Wednesday.
Similarly, Team USA and Italy met last year in the FIVB World Cup final match with both teams already earning berths into the 2008 Olympic Games.
Kalae Iki baseball clinic in Kona
Space is still available for the seventh Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Clinic, scheduled for July 18-20, at the Kailua-Kona regulation baseball diamond.
The free clinic is open to boys and girls, ages 7-17. Among the coaches participating are Mark Marques (Stanford), Sam Piraro (San Jose State), Ed Sprague (Pacific) and Joe Estrella (Hawaii-Hilo). Former major leaguers Tim Leary and Billy Hasselman will also be on staff.
Also, the coaching staff will hold a seminar entitled "Preparing Your Child for College" on July 20 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Kekuaokalani Gym.

Hilo baseball comes back to beat Maui
Jeremy Crivello singled home Cortney Aruda with the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning as the Hilo All-Stars came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Maui All-Stars 5-4 to win the big league division of the Hawaii State Little League Championships on Saturday in Hilo.
