Santiago wins Gatorade track honor

Zhane Santiago of Kahuku High was named the 2007-08 Gatorade Hawaii Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year yesterday.

The award distinguishes Santiago as the state's best high school girls track and field athlete.

The freshman had three first-place finishes at the state meet last month. Santiago won the 100-meter hurdles race with a time of 15.12 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 46.22.

Santiago also won the triple jump with an effort of 35 feet, 7 inches and placed third in the long jump with a leap of 17-0 1/2 . Santiago was the only triple winner at the state meet, where the Red Raiders placed third as a team.
