Rental vehicles cleared for Superferry rides
U-Haul and Ryder will also allow their trucks and vans on the vessel
Four rental-car and two moving-truck companies will allow renters to transport vehicles between Oahu and Maui on the Alakai, the Hawaii Superferry said yesterday.
Rental companies in the agreement are Hertz Rent a Car, Dollar/Thrifty Automotive Group, Alamo/National Rent a Car, Avis/Budget Group and JN Car & Truck Rental. U-Haul and Ryder will also allow trucks and vans to be transported.
Each rental company has separate rules and restrictions. Rental rates do not include Superferry travel.
» Hertz allows one-way travel for an additional fee determined by individual rental contracts. Shuttle service is not available.
» Dollar/Thrifty requires vehicles to be returned to the original rental location. Luxury vehicles cannot be rented for Superferry travel. An addendum attached to the rental contract is required. Shuttle service depends on demand.
» Alamo/National allows one-way travel for an additional fee determined by seasonal and rental transportation needs between Oahu and Maui. Shuttle service is available.
» Avis/Budget Group requires vehicles to be returned to the original rental location. Shuttle service is not available.
» JN Car & Truck Rental requires Oahu pick up and return. Shuttle service is not available.
U-Haul and Ryder both require customers to select the dimensions of the truck before booking Superferry tickets. One-way U-Haul rentals are allowed for an additional fee determined by rental size. Ryder does not have a Maui location.
Vehicles cannot be transported without a passenger, and drivers must have a valid driver's license and rental contract current through the date of travel.
Enterprise Rent a Car and Advantage Rent a Car do not allow rental vehicles on the Superferry.
One-way Superferry rates for vehicles less than 17 feet long and 8 feet high are $59 Tuesday through Thursday and $69 Friday through Monday and on peak travel holidays. Vehicles between 17 and 20 feet long and less than eight feet high are $94 off-peak and $104 on peak days. Forty-foot trucks more than eight feet high are $866 full and $528 empty.
The Superferry is offering $39 passenger and $55 passenger vehicle one-way promotional fares for travel through June 5, not including taxes and fees. Prices will then rise to $49 passenger and $65 passenger vehicle one-way through September 30, with fares for people 62 and older, children ages 2 through 12 and retired military personnel available at $39.
