Hawaii parents continued to favor Biblical names for boys, as did parents in other states.

Popular culture also drives name selection, according to the Social Security Administration, which traditionally releases the popular names on Mother's Day in Parade magazine. After Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie named their youngest daughter Shiloh, the named debuted on the compilation of 1,000 favorite names. Miley is new on the list this year, attributed to the popularity of teen actress Miley Cyrus. Elvis is still on the list, No. 676.

Chloe popped up higher on the Hawaii list of favorites this year -- was it stimulated by a dress designer gaining fame on reality television series "Project Runway" or an Oahu girls' basketball star?

Jayden was 18th on the U.S. list and ninth in Hawaii, continuing a fad among American parents to give boys names that rhyme with the word "maiden." Some of the names are made up, without reference to historical or ethnic name sources. Others are Aden, Kaden, Braden, with several spelling variations.

Another trend is to name girls after philosophical or spiritual concepts. In Hawaii, Faith, Hope, Grace, Serenity and Trinity are on the top 100 list. Mainland parents have also selected Destiny, Harmony, Journey, Miracle and, 31st on the list, is Nevaeh, "heaven" spelled backward.
