Grant will help charity shelter the needy
The
Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust awarded $750,000 to
Catholic Charities Hawaii to fund the acquisition of an apartment building and single-family house in Makiki. CCH is establishing a new social service community center to expand its programs and provide transitional housing in urban Honolulu for people in need.
Island Insurance Foundation has recognized 11 outstanding public high school principals by nominating them for its Fifth Annual Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award. The principals are John Brummel, Mililani High School; Michael Harano, Washington Middle; Gregg Lee, Stevenson Middle; Meredith Maeda, Castle High; Amy Martinson, Highlands Intermediate; Myron Monte, Dole Middle; Wilfred Murakami, Kealakehe High (Kailua-Kona); Annette Nishikawa, Kapolei Middle; Linda Puleloa, Molokai High; Caroline Wong, Moanalua Middle; and Gilmore Youn, Kapaa High (Kauai). Each nominee won $1,000; the winner will receive $10,000 and $15,000 for a school project of choice. The winner of the award, named for the founder of Island Insurance, will be announced May 21.
Katherine Ann Shires Blaisdell, a 2005 graduate of Hilo High School, won a Truman Scholarship at Chapman University in Southern California. She is a junior majoring in political science and wants to practice international law.
