UH group wins publications award

Paul Brandon, Brian Lawton and Val Krohn-Ching of the College of Education's Curriculum Research & Development Group at the University of Hawaii at Manoa received first place in the Outstanding Publications Competition from the American Educational Research Association. The award, in the applied research division, was for evaluating the ARTS FIRST Windward Research Project, which trains elementary school teachers to use the arts to teach reading and mathematics.

Hawaii Self Storage awarded scholarships worth up to $4,000 to Oahu public high school students. Each will receive annually renewable $1,000 awards for a maximum of two years for associate degrees or four years for bachelor's degrees. The winners include Heide Torno, Aiea High School; Maelen Joy Ancheta, Farrington; Stacie Gao, Kaimuki; Yuri Kang, Kalani; Tyrell Ma'ae, Kapolei; Jamie Sonobe, Leilehua; Lani Kim, McKinley; Kellen Miyasato, Mililani; Albert Mah, Moanalua; Kayla Schlaich, Pearl City; Marlena Malepeai, Radford; and Kristel Donalen Agustin, Waipahu.

Hoala School second-grader Isabel Palma-Fuller won first place in the Wahiawa Lions Club "Sight Is Beautiful" Poster Contest in the second- and third-grade category. The students illustrated how much they appreciated their vision. To prepare students for the contest, art teacher Tina Markel blindfolded them and asked them to lead each other around the school to increase awareness through other senses.
