Campbell moves into share of Red West lead

The duel between super sophomores went the way of the Sabers.

Katie Manuma hurled five scoreless innings and No. 3 Campbell scored three times in the bottom of the sixth in a 4-0 win over Leilehua yesterday morning.

The win by Campbell bumped the visiting Mules (4-2) out of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West. Campbell (4-1) and Mililani (4-1) share the division lead as the midway point of the regular season nears.

Manuma outdueled Leilehua's Kylen Ingues, who also permitted just five hits. The difference was the sixth inning, when Leina Kalua socked a run-scoring double, and versatile Breanne Patton delivered a two-run single.

Patton also relieved Manuma and earned a save with two innings on the mound.

Manuma improved to 2-1 in league play.

"She's throwing more strikes now," coach David Perreira said. "She still needs to work on keeping the ball down, but she's learning to hit her spots more."

Ingues baffled the home team for five innings.

"She works up and down in the zone and mixes up her speeds," Perreira noted. "It took us a third time around to get used to her. She's sneaky quick."

Leilehua could have remained in the Red West lead with a win.

"It's a hard loss," coach Stacy Araki said. "We got on base, but we just weren't hitting at the right time."

The Mules had runners at second and third in the top of the first, but came up empty. The good news, though, is that they'll get another shot at Campbell (14-4 overall) late in the regular season.

It was the first start for Ingues against the Sabers.

"This is her first year pitching on the varsity level," Araki added. "She didn't want to pitch last year because she was scared, but now she's older and wiser."

With two solid pitchers in Manuma and Patton, Campbell has regained momentum since losing to Mililani 10 days ago.

"Pearl City on Wednesday is a big game. We gotta finish the first half strong and take care of business," Perreira said. "Then we have a bye. That gives us time to work on our hitting a little bit and get down to basics, and get ready for Kapolei the following week."
