Primo beer bottle’s return has memories foaming over

BURP: So, the old Primo beer bottle is back. I can remember drinking my first bottle of Primo in Charley's Tavern when I was of age in 1951 as a UH student. I may have had a few Primos in Charley's when I was underage, too. It was 25 cents a bottle. Some guys would drink the other locally brewed, stronger-tasting beer, Royal. Sometimes we went up upscale and drank Lucky Lager, at 30 cents a can, imported from the mighty mainland. Primo was a big favorite. I even have a lei made of Primo beer caps that Jesse Kalima's son, Jesse Jr., gave me years ago. Recently, my colleague, Jason Genegabus, gave me a bottle of Primo, now part of Pabst and produced in Irwindale, Calif. I'm a wine drinker now, but I've got the new Primo in the fridge and will give it a try ...

Jo-Anne Kahanamoku will be honored with Duke's Waikiki's Ho'okahiko Award April 24 for her dedication to perpetuating Hawaiian culture through the art of feather cape and lei making. Jo-Ann is the daughter of Sam Kahanamoku, a brother of swimming and surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku. Besides her featherwork, Jo-Ann has lived up to the Kahanamoku name. She was one of the first women to crew on the Hokulea, making the 1980 34-day voyage to Tahiti, where she was born. She has sailed with her Polynesian Voyaging Society team through the waters of other Pacific islands from 1977 to 1998 ...

All-star cast in music of Hawaii Pops concert

People who enjoy the music of Hawaii are in for a treat when the Honolulu Symphony Toyota Pops presents "The Golden Age of Hawaii" Friday and next Saturday, 8 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Matt Catingub and Aaron Mahi will share the baton. Matt will feature vocalists Mihana Souza and Nathan Aweau when he conducts the orchestra. Aaron's stars will be singers Marlene Sai and the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Glee Club, and slack-key guitarists George Kuo and Martin Pahinui, and steel guitarist Bobby Ingano ... Campbell Estate Trustee Dave Heenan and wife Nery are off to Meadowood in Napa Valley for a College of William and Mary Business School retreat, Nery said, "Then we are going to San Francisco to celebrate my April Fool's birthday," she added. Dave marked his 68th birthday Easter Sunday ...
