Saint Louis hands Punahou a second ILH loss

The heat was on, but nothing rattles the craftsman.

Josh Saio overcame a rough beginning to finish with a four-hitter as No. 3 Saint Louis toppled second-ranked Punahou 7-3 last night before 350 fans at Ala Wai Field.

Saio gave up all three runs in the first two innings, but went on to allow no hits while recording 10 of his 11 strikeouts over the final five innings. At one point, the left-handed senior struck out five Buffanblu in a row -- an unheard-of feat against the four-time defending state baseball champions.

"Saio, man, he was dominant," Punahou coach Eric Kadooka said. "He set the tempo, was in command of three pitches tonight."

Saint Louis, which had just one error, improved to 6-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (14-5 overall), while Punahou dropped into third place at 5-2 (18-6-1 overall).

The Crusaders got to Punahou starter Evan Lim for a run in the first inning and three more in the second. Tamatoa DeMello led off with a double to left and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Gonzaga.

In the bottom of the first, Matt Suiter walked and eventually scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Tyler Young to tie the game at 1.

Kaden Kamoe's two-run single up the middle gave Saint Louis a 3-1 lead in the top of the second.

Paul Snieder then replaced Lim and had Evan Fujihara behind on an 0-2 count, but catcher Zach Kometani's errant throw to third went astray, allowing Kamoe to score easily.

Punahou came back with two runs in the second on an RBI single by Suiter and a run-scoring triple by Josh Bninski -- the result of right fielder Gonzaga's slip. However, Saio settled down and took over.

Two Punahou errors helped Saint Louis in the fourth, when a bunt by Lucas Gonsalves turned into a single and throwing error by Kometani, allowing Kamoe to score. Gonsalves later came home on a single by Danny Higa for a 6-3 lead.

Kamoe added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to bring home Moses Samia for a four-run lead.

Saio's studious approach was a key.

"Of all the guys, he's the one who calls me the most, studies charts," Saint Louis coach Duane Fraticelli said.

"I've never beaten Punahou. I had to adjust once they started hitting my fastballs," said Saio, who is now 3-0 with one save in league play.

Four Punahou errors opened the floodgates for the Crusaders, who had "only" eight hits against four hurlers.
