UH goes for green
Warriors move away from black and white uniforms in favor of a traditional look
Forget about any blackouts or whiteouts at Hawaii football games, at least any including the players.
The Warriors' new uniforms -- even the home set that is mostly black -- have a good portion of green in them.
"We're bringing the green back into our uniform," coach Greg McMackin said yesterday while introducing the team's new threads, provided by Under Armour. "We're excited about getting the green back into Hawaii."
UH has worn all black in recent years for many home games. The team wore all white as the designated visitors in the Sugar Bowl. And silver somehow found its way into the Warrior ensemble during the June Jones era -- to decidedly mixed reviews.
McMackin said that after receiving input from players and members of the community, he confirmed that green is the color of choice. And future plans include green jerseys, so that beginning in 2009, the Warriors can sport a different color scheme for selected big games.
"In the future we might come out in all green," he said.
Another highlight, McMackin said, is that the home black and road white jerseys both have "HAWAI'I" emblazoned above the numbers on the front of the shirt.
"We are the University of Hawaii. We're Hawaii's football team. We're going to put Hawaii at the top of our uniform," the coach said.
McMackin said the team will retain the dark green helmets and silver is out, anywhere on the uniform.
The Polynesian tapa pattern is still featured, on the jersey shoulders and sleeves as well as the numbers.
My whole thing is for the players," McMackin said. "I want them to be proud of what they're wearing."
No complaints yet.
"From what I see in the pictures, they're real nice," junior running back Leon Wright-Jackson said. "I like 'em, they're cool."
The Warriors will debut the road uniforms Aug. 30 in their season-opening game at Florida and the home uniforms a week later against Weber State.
