Moore pulls off surfing upset

Hawaii native Carissa Moore defeated current World Champion and top-seeded Stephanie Gilmore in a stunning third-round upset yesterday at the Roxy Pro in Queensland, Australia.

The 15-year-old Moore went on to defeat fellow local Melanie Bartels in the quarterfinals before falling to Samantha Cornish in the semifinals. Peru's Sofia Mulanovich defeated Cornish in the final.

UH softball team splits

Kate Robinson crushed a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and ace Courtney Baughman (7-0) pitched a complete-game win as the No. 15 Wahine cruised to a 6-2 victory against Western Kentucky yesterday on the first day of the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.

In the second game, Robinson (4-3) pitched a career-low two innings and the Wahine offense was shut out in a 4-0 loss to Long Beach State.

The tournament resumes today with Hawaii playing California and Nevada-Las Vegas.

Rainbow Wahine remain on top

The Rainbow Wahine track and field team picked up 33 team points to remain atop the standings yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championship in Nampa, Idaho.

Hawaii has 53 team points after two days of competition. Nevada is close behind with 40 1/2 points.

Pole vaulter Patricia Gauthier and Jessica Custance both cleared 12 feet 6 3/4 inches and based on the number of attempts, claimed silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The meet to decide the WAC champion concludes today.

Hawaii Pacific loses a close one

Ivan Fuji struck out and Jonah Hobson flew out with the potential tying run on second base in the ninth inning and the Hawaii Pacific baseball team fell to Northwest Nazarene 4-3 last night at Hans L'Orange Field.

Fuji and Hobson led the Sea Warriors (10-4) with a pair of hits. Toby Inouye took the loss with four runs allowed in seven innings.

Jimmy VanBeek led the Crusaders (8-3) with a double, a triple and two RBIs.

Vulcans rout Seasiders

Sophomore forward Samantha Nordstrom led her team with 17 points as Hawaii-Hilo crushed Brigham Young-Hawaii 84-54 last night in Hilo.
