Driver indicted in March ’07 death
Question: What ever happened to the driver who allegedly hit and killed a woman mowing grass when his truck ran off the road near Kailua-Kona a year ago?
Answer: Matthew Nalu Hall, 29, formerly of Kona but now living in Honolulu, was indicted last month on charges of second-degree negligent homicide and manslaughter in the death of Shelley Williams, 52, of Kona.
Hall was released on $10,000 bail, and trial before Circuit Judge Ronald Ibarra was set for June 10.
Late in the afternoon of March 5, Williams was mowing the grassy shoulder of a one-lane private road in front of her house two miles uphill from Keauhou Bay, Big Island police said at the time.
Fire Department paramedics described the road as flat with grassy, 5-foot-wide shoulders on each side.
Hall was believed to be speeding when he hit Williams, throwing her body several yards, police said.
Paramedics said Williams was dead when they arrived.
She was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m., according to police.
Hall was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger, which also hit a rock embankment, sheered off a utility pole and mangled Williams' lawn mower, police said.
The truck landed on its side, and Hall apparently got out through the passenger door, they said.
He was arrested at the scene but released pending charges.
Whether Hall had been using alcohol or drugs was not immediately determined, police said at the time.
Because the road is private, Williams' death was not counted as a traffic fatality, police said.
