Art in Plein Air stars on Maui
The third annual Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational starts Saturday with a Paint Out at D.T. Fleming Beach and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, from noon to 3 p.m. Works created on site will then be available for purchase at Village Galleries, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua beginning at 4 p.m., through Feb. 23.
Plein air, a French expression that translates as "open air," describes painting done outdoors, on location. It is a technique well-suited to Maui's inspiring landscapes and vistas. Because plein air paintings are done relatively quickly, they contain a fresh spontaneity.
Kevin Macpherson, whose 2005 book "Reflections on a Pond" documented the four seasons of the same landscape in painting, will join the invitational as a special guest. He will paint with the artists for part of the time and will give a free talk on "Magnificent Obsessions: From Monet's Garden to Macpherson's Pond," at 7 p.m. Feb. 20.
Other free events throughout the event include:
» The Pacific'O Sunset Paint Out: Artists will gather at 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at the beach park next to 505 Front Street Shops and Restaurants.
» Lahaina Harbor Quick Draw: Watch a painting being created from start to finish, from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 22. Completed works will be on display at the Maui No Ka 'Oi Magazine Gala Reception at the Village Gallery Contemporary, 180 Dickenson St., the same evening.
» Coffee and Pastries with the Artists: Meet the artists and purchase work at Village Gallery Contemporary, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 23.
