It wasn't a typical performance for a No. 1 team.
After all, Kalaheo's top scorer went scoreless for nearly half the game and its leading rebounder was a 5-foot-7 point guard. In the end, however, Cheynne Lishman and Taylor Jay came through in Kalaheo's 45-37 come-from-behind win over sixth-ranked Kahuku last night at Mililani's gym.
The Mustangs closed out the regular season with a 12-0 mark, their first flawless record since the 2001 squad won a state crown. Lishman led Kalaheo with 13 points despite a tough shooting night against Kahuku's man-to-man defense.
Jay added 10 points and seven boards, including five key caroms in the final quarter as Kalaheo rallied from a seven-point deficit.
"One of our goals was to go 12-0," said Lishman, who had six rebounds. "It's been a while since we had a perfect (regular) season."
Lishman's NBA-range 3-pointer from the top broke a 36-all tie with 1:34 remaining. The 6-foot-1 senior added two free throws with 1:15 left to cap a resounding 18-6 run by the Mustangs.
The Red Raiders, who shot 7-for-14 from the foul line, got no closer than four the rest of the way.
Jray Galeai paced the Red Raiders with 11 hard-earned points and Irwin Ah-Hoy added nine. It was another frustrating finish for Kahuku, which lost to Kalaheo 50-48 two weeks ago and fell at Moanalua 48-45 earlier in the week.
Kalaheo did not have a turnover in the final quarter.
"I think we let it slip away. Kalaheo's a good team. The opportunities they had, they took advantage. We're getting closer to where we wanna be, but we have a lot of things to clean up," Galeai said, referring to two key foul shots he missed down the stretch. "Free throws. We need to work on that."
Kahuku (9-3) and Kalaheo had already clinched first-round byes in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoffs, but went full-throttle before a raucous crowd of about 800 last night.
"You always want to keep moving in the right direction," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "We're going after it."
Kahuku led for most of the first three quarters and opened a 30-23 lead after Galeai broke away for a fast-break layup with 7 minutes to play in the fourth. That's when Furtado inserted his quick lineup and went to a fullcourt press.
The press didn't yield turnovers, but Kahuku started rushing shots and Kalaheo answered with quick fast-break points. Reserve guard Cody vonAppen drove for a three-point play, and Lishman found Bruce Andrews for a layup in transition as the Mustangs cut the lead to two in a 15-second span.
Three times, the Mustangs re-tied the game before Lishman launched his go-ahead 3-point bomb.
"Gosh, that felt like the only shot I made. One thing we have that Kahuku doesn't is perseverance," said Lishman, who had only one basket in the first three quarters before finishing strong.
Furtado kept the flawless 12-0 mark in perspective.
"It means nothing if we're not 13-0 next Friday," he said.
Kahuku limited Kalaheo to 29 percent shooting (16-for-56). The Red Raiders also shot 29 percent from the field (14-for-48).
Kalaheo improved to 21-5 overall. Kahuku is 14-5 for the season.

OIA RED WEST BOYS
Mililani 54, Leilehua 44
Scott Burns poured in 19 points and Curtis Murakami had two key steals in the final 2 minutes to preserve the Trojans' win.
Reid Pangelinan scored four of his 10 points down the stretch for Mililani, which finished in a three-way tie with Kapolei and Campbell atop the Red West.
Because Mililani went 1-3 during regular-season play against Kapolei and Campbell, the Trojans have the third seed in the Red West and will begin playoff action in Wednesday's opening round.
Campbell was 3-1 against the other two co-leaders, and Kapolei was 2-2.
Hoku Kama drilled four treys and finished with 16 points to lead Leilehua, which missed a chance to grab a share of the lead.
The Mules trailed by 11 in the fourth quarter. They pulled within 48-44 on free throws by Kolwyn Dixon and Kama with 2 minutes left but got no closer.
