A silent march and candlelight vigil this evening will honor slain toddler Cyrus Belt and Janel Tupuola, who was beaten to death in Kailua.

The public is invited to meet at 5 p.m. at the state Capitol’s Father Damien statue to walk down Beretania Street and up to the Miller Street overpass for a candlelight vigil.

Belt, just shy of his second birthday, was thrown to his death from the H-1 pedestrian overpass on Thursday. His neighbor, Matthew Higa, 23, has been charged with murder and is scheduled to appear in District Court today.

Tupuola, 29, a mother of five, died Wednesday after she was beaten with the stock of a shotgun on Maluniu Avenue. Her ex-boyfriend, Alapeti Siuanu Tunoa Jr., has been charged with second-degree murder and is also set to make his first court appearance today.

State Rep. John Mizuno, who is helping organize the march, has asked people to wear black clothing, a black ribbon or arm band to honor the victims. At least 50 people are expected to participate in the event, said state Rep. Karen Awana.
