Wahine win first WAC game

Sophomore guard Megan Tinnin scored a career-high 18 points, 10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as the Hawaii women's basketball team won its first conference game last night, defeating host San Jose State 70-54.

The victory came on the last night of a four-game Western Athletic Conference road trip for the Rainbow Wahine (7-10, 1-3). Sophomore forward Dita Liepkalne added 12 points and senior forward Tanya Smith 11.

The Spartans fell to 1-15 and 0-3.

More honors for Waimea's Dizon

As his football career continues, so do the honors for Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04).

The linebacker for the University of Colorado was named the Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year for the state of Colorado by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's Colorado chapter.

Dizon, who will compete in Saturday's Senior Bowl in Alabama, was a consensus first team All-American, a Butkus Award runner-up, a unanimous first team All-Big 12 pick and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He led the country in solo tackles (12) and was second nationally in combined tackles (160).

UH divers sweep own invitational

Led by Emma Friesen's first-place showing, Hawaii's female divers took the top three spots in the 1-meter competition as the Rainbow Diving Invitational concluded yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Friesen scored 291, followed by Rainbow Wahine teammates Raquel Bartlow (260.30) and Stephanie De Lima (254.90).

In the men's competition, UH's Magnus Frick (377.20) easily took the title over teammate Mats Wiktorsson (314.25). Connecticut's Steve Ferreria was a distant third (.257.05).

All-American Tess Schofield of UCLA won the platform event with 249.49 points. De Lima was second (2.33.45) and the Bruins' Morgan Erpenbeck third (224.80).

Chaminade wins eighth in row

Led by Marko Kolaric's 23 points, the Chaminade men's basketball team extended its winning streak to eight with a 63-51 victory over Notre Dame de Namur last night at McCabe Gym.

Rodrick Johnson added 16 points for the Silverswords (12-4, 7-0) against the Argonauts (4-9, 0-5).

» At Afook-Chinen Civic, Jay De Maestri came off the bench for 36 points as Hawaii-Hilo avenged Friday's loss to Grand Canyon with an 88-82 victory over the Antelopes (9-5, 4-3).

The Vulcans (8-5, 4-2) finished 10 of 20 from behind the arc.

» At Cannon Activities Center, Lucas Alves scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Hawaii Pacific 74-53.

Jermaine Odjegba added 14 points for the Seasiders (9-4, 4-2). Logan Wolf had 13 points for the Sea Warriors (4-12, 1-6).

Grand Canyon stops Hilo women

» At Afook-Chinen, Samantha Murphy scored 23 points to help Grand Canyon hand UH-Hilo its first conference loss 68-67.

Krystielyn Omlan scored 15 points for the Vulcans (5-8, 5-1). The Antelopes (6-5, 6-2) hit 12 free throws in the last minute.

» At McCabe Gym, Ashley Wilson scored 21 points as Notre Dame de Namur (3-10, 3-2) defeated Chaminade (0-14, 0-7) for the second consecutive night, 78-55.

» At Cannon Activities Center, Ashley Jenkins scored 20 points before fouling out and Hawaii Pacific (3-8, 3-4) held on to beat Brigham Young-Hawaii for the second time in four days, 70-68.

Richelle Fenebock led the Seasiders (2-13, 2-4) with 15 points.
