Trojans slow ’Canes

By Paul Honda
phonda@starbulletin.com

Just call them the Hurricane heartbreakers.

For a second time in three weeks, the Mililani Trojans were just a wee bit better than the Kapolei Hurricanes. This time, Chelsea Korodan scored 13 points and blocked a 3-point try by Ashlee Dela Cruz with 3 seconds left to preserve a 42-39 win at the 'Canes' home court in Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball last night.

Back on Dec. 18, Mililani won a 39-37 thriller at home over Kapolei.

Korodan, sister of former Mililani standout Christina Korodan, blocked two shots by Kapolei's go-to scorer in the final minutes. Dela Cruz finished with 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Leilani Tuani-Fifita hauled in eight boards to power Kapolei (3-4).

"I just know she's the hot shooter. Last game against us, she made a shot from almost halfcourt before halftime," Korodan said.

Dela Cruz pumped twice to get Korodan in the air, but didn't try to initiate contact as Korodan made the block. Korodan was fouled with 1 second left and missed both free-throw shots, but Kapolei was unable to get a desperation shot off.

The Trojans improved to 4-3 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West play.

"Hopefully, that turned the corner for us," first-year Mililani coach Pat Basilio said. "We finally have a full roster now."

Sophie Chang added 10 points for Mililani, which shot just 29 percent (12-for-42) against Kapolei's man-to-man defense. Kapolei shot 33 percent (14-for-43) and outrebounded the Trojans 34-24.

However, the 'Canes were only 7-for-19 from the foul line (37 percent), including 5-for-15 in the second half.

Mililani used a 2-3 zone, and then unleashed a frantic fullcourt press after halftime to force 12 Kapolei turnovers. A 3-pointer by Chang sparked a 7-0 run that gave the Trojans their biggest lead, 22-14.

Dela Cruz scored 10 points during a 13-2 run by the 'Canes, including a 3-point banker from the wing to give Kapolei a 27-24 lead with 6:22 remaining.

Mililani took back the lead for good, 31-30, on Korodan's third 3-pointer with 3:42 left. The Trojans extended the lead to 39-34 after Meilin Akiu hustled for a putback and a three-point play with 1:49 to go.

On the ensuing possession, an offensive-foul call against Dela Cruz drew the ire of Kapolei coach Jesse Baugh. Still, the 'Canes got within 40-38 in the final minute before Dela Cruz's shot near the bucket was blocked by Korodan. Dela Cruz followed with a miss from the corner, and Mililani's Chelsea Basilio hit a free throw to give Mililani a 41-38 lead.

After Kapolei's Tahnee Foki missed a tough shot inside, Mililani guard Joleen Realin hit a foul shot for a 42-38 lead with 19 seconds left.

Danniel Tapat hit a foul shot with 8 seconds left to bring Kapolei within 42-39. Her miss on the second attempt turned into a hot potato before falling into the arms of Dela Cruz for her game-tying 3-point try.

Baugh questioned officials after the final buzzer, but got no consolation.

"Honestly, I really don't know why he was mad. It was double bonus for both teams," Basilio said, adding that he didn't see the offensive foul that upset Baugh.

Baugh declined to comment.
