Cleanup planned for Iwilei site
Weston Solutions Inc., a Pennsylvania-based redevelopment firm, has acquired a four-acre site in Iwilei next to the Dole Cannery retail complex.
The company plans to clean up contamination on the property, previously a Gasco manufacturing plant, at 616 Iwilei Rd. The seller is BHP Hawaii Inc., according to county records.
Terms of the sale, which closed on Dec. 31, weren't disclosed, though property records show an assessed value of $9.56 million.
The company hasn't determined a use for the site, which is zoned for industrial mixed use, allowing for retail, industrial, condominiums and storage.
"We're evaluating a number of different options there; obviously we want to do something that fits well with the surrounding area," said Peter Ceribelli, Weston's redevelopment division manager.
Ceribelli said the site could potentially be developed for another big-box retailer to fit in with neighboring Costco, Home Depot and still-planned Lowe's.
The cleanup and redevelopment of the site is expected to take one to two years, he said.
