Waialua’s Sakamoto named Harvard’s dermatology chief

It's always a pleasure to write about a local boy or girl who makes good, and Dr. Greg Sakamoto, brought up in Waialua where he went to school, has certainly done that. He has been named chief resident of the dermatology program at Harvard. Greg graduated from UH with a degree in biology in 1999 and from the John Burns School of Medicine in 2005. Greg attended USC in 1995. The doctor is also a musician, having performed with Native Blend, and still enjoys singing and playing guitar and ukulele. He is married to the former Brooke Izumoto and they have a daughter, Cassidy, 2. Greg's parents are John and Juanita Sakamoto of Waialua ...

Actors Adam Sandler and Kevin James and their families had breakfast at the Royal Hawaiian's Surf Room yesterday. They are here for the Sony Open, as are the Backstreet Boys. The actors are playing in the Sony Pro-Am today. The Backstreet Boys, who are staying at the Royal, are performing at a Sony Open banquet tomorrow at the Convention Center ... Sandler and his daughter were in Satura Cakes at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center earlier on the visit. After looking over the display of cakes, he joked with employees about how they could stay fit working in the store ... Harry Winston is the official jeweler for the Sony. On Sunday, store director James Schaefer and sales chief Ken Kashiki will present the Sony winner with an 18-carat white-gold watch valued at $26,900 ... Heather Hays, ex-Miss Hawaii USA, to visit

Heather Hays, Miss Hawaii USA in 1992, will visit in March from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where she is an anchor for the Fox-TV outlet. Heather won an Emmy when she was pregnant with her 8-month-old daughter. Her baby was appropriately named Emmy. Her second child is expected in June. Heather's husband, Jeff Roberts, a broker specializing in land deals, and Emmy will make the Hawaii trip with her. The family lives in Dallas ... MidWeek's Yu Shing Ting will never forget Oct. 2. Not only is that her birthday, but her son was born on that same date last year. The boy's name is Koen Kaimalieokalani Makinano. Dad is Travin Makinano ...
