Killer on the loose after Kalihi slaying

Star-Bulletin staff

Police were looking for a male suspect in the fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old man in Kalihi early yesterday.

Police said that at about 12:01 a.m. Fugitogamala Savea of Kalihi was standing with friends near the entrance of Kuhio Park Terrace and Linapuni and North School streets when he was approached by the suspect.

Police said the suspect got upset at the victim and stabbed him in the chest with a knifelike object.

A guard at the housing area did not see the stabbing, but saw Savea lying on the ground and attempted to revive him, housing management officials said.

Savea was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:16 a.m. An autopsy revealed he had been stabbed in the heart, according to the city Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said it appears the suspect and victim did not know each other.

The suspect was wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts, white jogging shoes and a dark baseball cap, and had shoulder-length hair, police said. He was seen headed east on School Street. Anyone with information is asked to call homicide investigators at 529-3115.
