The big news in the November Nielsen ratings for Honolulu is the strong debut of KGMB's brand new morning news show that premiered Sept. 17 -- and debuted at No. 3 of four local news choices.

"We had the challenge of going into a rating period six weeks after launch, after years of not creating any good reason for people to watch," in the morning, said Rick Blangiardi, senior vice president and general manager.

KITV's morning, 6 and 10 p.m. news programs show ratings growth.

The 5 p.m. rating was the same as last November, "but we're up in every newscast, certainly from May," said Mike Rosenberg, president and general manager.

KITV's 5 o'clock news ties with top-ranked KGMB in key demographics, adults and women ages 25 to 54. KHON's 5 p.m. adult demographic rating is a point higher than the other two stations.

KHNL's new 11 a.m. newscast hit the air after the Nov. 1 to 28 Nielsens ended, so it is not included in the survey data.

"Sunrise" is doing "awesome," said Candace Hirleman, KGMB's marketing director.

"In a diary market, it usually takes a year for any numbers to show up." Viewership in many larger Nielsen markets is measured with meters, a technology that will eventually come to Honolulu, she said.

"Sunrise" will expand its slot to air from 4:30 to 8 a.m. on Jan. 7.

KGMB's 10 p.m. news has been No. 1 for five straight rating periods. TVs that are turned off after the news at night turn on to the same station in the morning and many of the sets are clearly staying tuned to KGMB.

Credit is due to the night team as, "they gave us a platform to do something great in the morning," she said.

Independent of local news, local talk show "NightTime with Andy Bumatai," does a two rating and a three share at 9:30 p.m. on KFVE-TV.

The "June Jones Show" on KGMB scores a nine rating, 31 share at 10:30 p.m. Sundays, ranking equally well with 25 to 54 year old men and women.

The February and May ratings are sure to show upticks for KHON as another season of FOX ratings juggernaut American Idol will be airing.
