On a rainy day that left the course covered in puddles and caused untold problems with the electronic timing system, 30-year-old Ethiopian runner Ambesse Tolossa defended his title at the 35th Honolulu Marathon yesterday in 2:17:26, in a tactical race devoid of standout performances.
"My stomach was very bad," runner-up Jimmy Muindi, 34, said after finishing in 2:18:53 -- his slowest Honolulu Marathon in 14 years of participating here. Eric Nzioki, also from Muindi's native Kenya, finished third in 2:21:32.
Muindi, who came into this race seeking his sixth win in Honolulu, began having trouble after 13 miles. He speculated that some beef he ate last night might have caused the problem.
"My legs were OK, but every time I tried to drink water, I just felt like vomiting," he said. Consequently, he didn't consume enough fluids in the humid conditions.
That clinging humidity could have distracted women's winner Alevtina Biktimirova, but it didn't. The two downpours early on in the race didn't faze last year's runner-up as she pulled away from Japan's Akemi Ozaki to finish more than a minute ahead at 2:33:07. That was more than 2 minutes slower than her second-place time of last year.
Biktimirova averaged a 5:50.5 mile in her first marathon win since 2005. Ozaki, one of two designated pace-setters, decided she would make a run at the women's title despite running the Toyko Marathon less than a month ago. After a valiant duel with Biktimirova in the second half, she gradually succumbed to the Russian's powerful strides by the 21st mile.
Masazumi Soejima won the men's wheelchair race in 1:33:17, while Susannah Rice-Kamanu took the women's race in 3:33:57. Tolossa and Biktimirova each earned $40,000.
As for the men, the lead pack of five competitors completed the first mile in 5 minutes, then quickened the pace to pass through the 10K mark in 30:32. After a blazing first 9 miles, the group dropped to four, which included the top three finishers and Boniface Mbuvi Muema, also of Kenya.
By mile 20, only Tolossa and Muindi remained, having slowed their pace to 5:20 per mile -- slower than these athletes often run in training. With the possibility of records (and financial bonuses) out the window, and $40,000 for first place vs. $16,000 for second, it became a tactical game for the win.
Just when it looked like it might come down to a sprint along Kalakaua Avenue, Tolossa surged at the base of Diamond Head hill near Black Point Road. A look of agony crossed Muindi's face, and even before he vomited multiple times, it became clear he would have to settle for second place again.
Not that it was easy for Tolossa. He complained of cramping in his quadriceps and painfully peeled his shoes off his blistered feet almost immediately after crossing the finish line.
But Tolossa offered nothing but compliments to Muindi. "He's a very good athlete, and I'm happy (with my performance)," he said through an interpreter. He plans to work even harder and return every year.
A deluge greeted the 27,892 participants in the 35th Honolulu Marathon yesterday morning, waning just in time for a 2 1/2-minute-long fireworks show to coat the early morning sky in myriad colors.
Almost immediately after the cannon sounded, five Kenyans and an Ethiopian separated themselves from the crowd -- some dressed in grass skirts and Santa hats. Aside from another downpour in Waikiki that left Kapiolani Park virtually swimming in mud, conditions remained good with a temperature of 72 degrees at the start with 3- to 4-mph winds -- just about as calm as it gets on Kalanianaole Highway.
The rainy weather didn't deter fans, who lined the streets in Waikiki to cheer the elite runners to an easy 4:49 mile along that stretch before hitting the 10K in 30:32.
"In the beginning I was OK; the pace was very much OK with me," said yesterday's runner-up Jimmy Muindi, the five-time champion from Kenya, who also holds the course record in 2:11:13 (his best on a different course is 2:07:49).
The leaders glided through the 15K mark in 46:40, despite the constant disruption from motorcycles, trucks and camera crews. With an unofficial pace maker who allowed Muindi and eventual winner Ambesse Tolossa of Ethiopia to lead on several occasions, Muindi seemed poised to hit the half-marathon mark in his target 1:05, leaving open the possibility of the record-breaking 2:10 he came here to do.
But by the time they hit 10 miles in 50:07, the pace had slowed -- permanently. They went through the half-marathon in 1:06.
"Tolossa's gone behind Jimmy again, and kind of assumed the position," Honolulu Marathon president Jim Barahal said about Tolossa's habit of letting others dictate the cadence.
There's a reason for that, according to Toni Reavis, host of ESPN's Elite Racing and a veteran radio announcer for the Honolulu Marathon. "Ethiopians work on things like all-out 60-meter sprints," which is why they are content to sit back and wait for a race of any distance to come down to the last stretch. "They don't go to see how fast they can run," he said. "They go to win races."
By mile 14, the pace had begun to fluctuate enough for Reavis to comment repeatedly on the "gamesmanship" taking place on the course. In the past, Muindi has made a move between miles 18 and 19, throwing in a 4:44 mile or two to "destroy the competition," said Reavis. But not today.
Not even Tolossa understood why Muindi didn't surge, until Muindi started vomiting about 2 miles from the finish.
The pace dropped even more through Hawaii Kai and on the highway back to Kahala. Even so, only Muindi and Tolossa could maintain it. Mile 22 was the slowest of the race at 5:31. "They're just going easy," said Reavis. "They're not suffering at all."
Muindi's manager, Zane Branson, confirmed that the pace was "quite pedestrian." But it turned out that both athletes were not in top form.
Tolossa was fending off cramps and blisters, while Muindi battled an upset stomach that would not allow him to consume enough fluids or run the pace he had trained for. Deafening cheers from the human snake winding its way over Diamond Head encouraged Tolossa, who pulled away dramatically from Muindi in the final 2 miles.
"They ran too fast only in retrospect," said Reavis. "It was all a conspiracy of circumstances. They were both vulnerable, but there was no one to take advantage." In other words, the field wasn't deep enough.
Barahal called it a "match race," and said he intends to "take some measures to juice this up next year," presumably by inviting people who will push the pace no matter what the circumstances.
Despite finishing second to Tolossa again, Muindi was not disappointed. After dropping out of the other two marathons he attempted this year, he took some satisfaction in completing one. He also assured Hawaii's running fans that he intends to return next year, 15 years after his debut at the Honolulu Marathon. And not just to run, he smiled. "I will come back to win again."
