Ex-KHNL anchor likes life in real estate

Question: What ever happened to Lyle Galdeira, former KHNL anchor/reporter and host of news segments "Cheap Eats" and "Does It Work?"

Answer: Galdeira has been enjoying his job as a Prudential Realtor associate, selling residential real estate, and in his free time, watching football and spending time with family.

"It's going very well," Galdeira, 52, said yesterday. "I really wish I had discovered this (real estate) 20 or 30 years ago, because I'm having a ball."

In 2005, Galdeira left Channel 8 after 10 years with the station. He told the Star-Bulletin at the time, "I've just got to do something different and refresh myself."

With his KHNL departure, Galdeira ended a 30-year broadcasting career that started with radio in Portland, Ore.

He joined Prudential in 2006. The market continues to do well today, he said, with opportunities for buyers and sellers.

"What I love about this is that I get to help people," he said. "It's not really about selling houses; it's about selling yourself to people and working with them and helping them realize their goals and dreams."

Since his exit from TV, Galdeira and his wife, Kathy, have seen their son, Kyle, graduate with a journalism degree summa cum laude from Hawaii Pacific University.

Kyle Galdeira works as a Web editor/sports information director for Hawaii Winter Baseball. Lyle Galdeira's daughter, Emma, is a sophomore at Kamehameha High School.

Does Galdeira think he'll ever go back to TV? Never close the door on anything, he said. However, he warns his son to avoid the camera. With major corporate ownership, the business has changed, and the employees are not valued as much, he said.

Still, people often say they miss him on the tube. "I hear that every day. A lot of people still think I'm on TV."
