WAHINE BASKETBALL
Rainbow Wahine rebound from loss
Hawaii rebounded in a big way on the final day of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic.
The Rainbow Wahine controlled the boards against Northern Arizona and showed composure down the stretch with a 67-51 win over the Lumberjacks, in stark contrast to a blowout loss at the hands of tournament champion UC Davis the night before.
Hawaii (2-1) got a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Tanya Smith, and guards Keisha Kanekoa and Megan Tinnin combined for 24 points and 17 rebounds in building a 48-32 team advantage in caroms. Dita Liepkalne added seven points and nine rebounds despite a bruised knee suffered just before halftime.
Coach Jim Bolla talked to his team about boxing out and being aggressive in the paint before the game, after the smaller Davis Aggies nearly matched Hawaii board-for-board the night before.
"Our goal is to get 50 a game," Bolla said. "The other night we just did a poor job on a team that only averaged 30, (Davis almost) outrebounded us and controlled the game."
Smith had been a force all tournament in going for a double-double in each of the three games, but the rest of the team needed to match the effort. Tinnin said rebounding wasn't just one of the things their team emphasized going in -- it was the only thing.
"Oh yeah, that's what it was all about," said the sophomore, who posted her best all-around game since going for 17 at Utah State as a freshman. "We realize if we don't get boards, we're not gonna win games."
Davis went on a 22-4 run to win going away against Hawaii on Saturday, something that was fresh in the minds of the Rainbow Wahine. They were tested again down the stretch after building a 14-point lead on the Lumberjacks, who were led by Janelle Matthews' 15 points.
Northern Arizona cut the lead to four with 3 minutes left behind an 11-4 run. But Smith responded with a turnaround jumper and a layup sandwiched by pretty high-low passes to Kanekoa and Liepkalne for easy buckets, and Hawaii closed out the game on a 14-2 run.
